Summer is here! And along with it, the blustery winds have arrived in Cascais and the "barrão" has settled over the hills of Sintra! This is quite typical of this time of the year in this area.
As you will notice, the "barrão" usually hovers over the Peninha sanctuary covering some of the villages near Cabo da Roca. There are days when a difference of 10 degrees Celcius can be felt between Cascais and Azoia! This is why the vegetation on the north side of the mountain is more exuberant and the town of Sintra is often cloudy and cooler...but don't let this dissuade you from exploring the extraordinary treasures which can be found in that area.
These days, when we still have significant limitations on group events and lunches, going out for hikes and guided walks whilst keeping physical distance is one of the few group activities still allowed. (Please see details below.)
Despite all the challenges we have faced in the last few months, the women of IWP have shown that they care for each other and support the organization. In order to comply with legal requirements, we organized a General Meeting via Zoom (online) which was a success! Several members attended and all requirements were met. (Please see details below.)
Also, at this time of the year, a lot of families arrive in Portugal to live, finding their way in a foreign country. We know how overwhelming and crazy those times can be. So, if you come across English speaking ladies who might need help and guidance, please tell them about IWP and invite them to our weekly coffee mornings. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to learn about local hints and tips, and make new friends among the diverse, helpful and cheerful group of women that make up IWP. I know from experience this makes a big difference in our lives and I am ever so thankful I found IWP!
Happy Summer and please stay safe and healthy!
Maria Barros, (IWP President) and the Executive Board Members

Important Information regarding all IWP Outdoor Group Activities
Following the recent viral pandemic with COVID 19, the Executive Board of IWP would like to ensure the following rules are followed in all outdoor group activities of IWP:
Women in Portugal (IWP) will follow the official governmental directives and Health authority’s recommendations with respect to the use of protective equipment as well as social distancing. As such, this being an outdoor group activity, the use of the mask is optional. However, you need to carry one in case of an accident in which we may need to get closer to help each other.
Social distancing is compulsory and will be enforced by the group activity leaders.
If you are infected or have the symptoms of COVID 19 you will not be allowed to join IWP group activities or events.
Group walks will be limited to 9 participants (+ 1 leader/ organizer).
Financial Review General Meeting of last 29th of June 2020
Thank you to all the members who attended this week's online (via Zoom!) Financial Review General Meeting. We had 32 attending members who unanimously approved the 2019 Financial Report as well as the 2020 Budget.
A special thanks to the Executive Board (Kathryn Rawlings, Barbara Schafer, Annemarie Simmons and Philomena Hogg), the Members Representation Board (Louise Ross, Barbara Flynn and Jeanine Nazareth) and the Financial Review Board (Sharon Wake, Jackie Kennard and Flavia Soares) and Natale Bayly for their support in the preparation to this meeting.
In the early part of the meeting, the President updated the members attending on the three main priorities of the Board this year:
1. The IWP Constitution and Internal Regulations have been reviewed and updated and now wait for approval by the members in a General Meeting when we can share them and discuss them. We hope that in November, when traditionally we hold our Annual General Meeting, we will be able to present these to you, face to face.
2. The new IWP Website is under construction. We have had some delays due to this crisis but we are confident we will announce its launch soon. The website is our main platform to communicate with you, schedule and announce our events and the first introduction to new members so we are working hard to make it easy to use and an efficient tool to support us.
3. In exchange for a program of classes of English, French and Arraiolos delivered by some of our members in the Senior Center in Bairro do Rosario, the local authorities agreed to let us have a space in downtown Cascais. This Club House has an office area and a meeting room that we hope will be the base for some of our group activities and meetings, when this will be possible again. At the moment, only the Executive Board meets there.
Please see below a few pictures of the Club House. We cannot wait for its inauguration!
