IWP Newsletter – November 2020

Welcome to the IWP Newsletter, where you can find the latest IWP news and events so you can make the most of your time in Portugal.

Dearest members of IWP,

Another month has gone by and so many things have changed! In this month’s newsletter, we want to share some resources (links) where you can read about the new restrictions due to the increasing Covid-19 cases, tell you how that has impacted our group activities, and let you know how we are re-inventing some of these activities online.

We are excited also with producing new posts that will be available in our Facebook Members Forum as well as our Website. They will include cooking sessions, how to start a Google Meet call and many others.

We will also explain to you about the elections…no, not those elections!  Our elections!  Under our current IWP Constitution, we are required to elect a new Executive Board, Financial Review Board and Member Representative Board in November and we are looking for candidates!

We often hear that connecting with other IWP ladies has made your life in Portugal so much easier, and that it helps you find your place ina new community. In order to keep the spirit and mission of IWP alive, we are asking for your time and enthusiasm. Please see the final section of this newsletter for more details.

It’s time to get ready for Winter.  Let’s face this pandemic together, by engaging virtually with other members of IWP, supporting each other and participating in IWP online events. Oh, and don’t forget to offer to contribute more to this great group of women. We need you!

We know you are all concerned with the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Portugal.  Your IWP Executive Board has assembled a list of sources where you can get up-to-date information in English.  Stay safe, stay informed, stay in touch.

Application to combat the pandemic is now available too.

The StayAway Covid app that aims to identify potential exposures to people infected with Covid-19 is now available for download on iOS and Android. The use of the  app  launched by the Government is voluntary, free and anonymous, and intends to function as a complementary tool to contain the expansion of the Covid-19 pandemic.
How does the  StayAway Covid  app  work?

The operation is simple: each user who has tested positive can enter the test code in the app. After validation by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), the application will alert other users who have been close to the infected user – for 15 minutes or more – always without revealing their identity, their contacts or those of other users. When there is no record of proximity contacts with a high risk of contagion, the  app’s  homepage displays a green color that will change to yellow whenever the user has been close to someone who has been diagnosed with Covid-19. For more information:  https://www.sns.gov.pt/noticias/2020/09/01/stayaway-covid-2/

2020 ELECTIONS

Dear Members,

As per our constitution it is my duty, as President of the Member Representative Board (MRB), to call the IWP General Meeting (GM) with elections. Historically, the GM has been held in late November, wherein new board members have been voted in with a show of hands, followed by a social lunch.

This year, because of the need to social distance, we cannot hold an in-person meeting. Therefore, the tentative proposed format is to conduct a virtual meeting to introduce candidates for the positions of President of the Executive Board, the Member Representative Board and the Financial Review Board. Members will have to vote during the online meeting (details to follow). A legal counsel will be attending (as during last Financial GM and will count the votes and write the minutes). The results of the elections will be announced within 30 days of the GM on our website and via our newsletter.

Thank you for your understanding.
Sincerely,
Louise Ross, President MRB

As described by Louise Ross above, we need to elect a President for each of the three Boards that govern this Association:

a. The Membership Representation Board is to ensure that the opinions and concerns of the Association’s members about the functioning and direction of the Association are considered by its leadership.
b. The Executive Board has the responsibility and power to direct and administer the Association as stated in the Statutes and the Internal Regulations.
c. The Financial Review Board regularly audits the work of the Treasurer and shall report any inconsistencies or concerns to the President of the Membership Representation Board.
d. These Boards shall function for two years from 1st January to 31st December.Additionally, we need IWP members to help us with editing and updating our website, and Facebook pages, as well as supporting the Executive Board Members in their roles.

If you would like to help us by giving some of your time and enthusiasm, for any of the roles mentioned above or any other you want to offer, please contact Maria, our president, via email to: executivepresident.iwp@gmail.com

And now…
A word from our previous President, Joia Lewis

Hello dear members!

This has been quite a year and I am ever grateful for the friendships and connections I have made through IWP since my return to Portugal…nearly three years ago now! It was an honor and also my pleasure to serve as your Vice-President in 2018 and President in 2019. While my health has its challenges, my heart and mind were always happy to join you in our coffees, lunches, and activities, and staying in touch with many of you throughout these pandemic months has continued to mean so much to me. You have all deepened and widened my understanding of Portugal and its place in our world – I came back to Portugal to be near childhood friends, so finding in all of you links to so many other cultures and biographies, has truly been inspiring and rewarding for me.

Elections are coming later this month and I hope that many of you can participate – I will be in online attendance! I am so proud of how our Executive Board has continued, updated, and enriched our forms of communication and interaction, and especially for their work under Maria’s guidance in keeping us informed throughout these difficult months in 2020.

Beijinhos e abraços – metaphorical for now but meant from my heart!Joia Lewis

We also have a closed Facebook group (IWP Members Forum) for members to share ideas and fun photos of the activities they do together. Lookup this closed group and ask to join! We look forward to seeing you there!

Best wishes,

Maria Barros and the members of the Executive Board of the IWP
